Suzuki Jimny vs Land Rover Defender 90
A comparison people make constantly, usually meaning two quite different things by “Defender”.
Which Defender?
The classic Defender 90 — the pre-2016 utilitarian one — is a closer philosophical match to the Jimny: ladder frame, live axles, minimal refinement, enormous character. The current L663 Defender 90 is a sophisticated, heavy, monocoque-based luxury 4×4 that happens to be extremely capable.
Comparing a Jimny to the modern one is comparing a hand tool to a machine. Comparing it to the classic is a real contest.
Jimny vs classic Defender 90
Jimny advantages: vastly more reliable, far cheaper to run, actually waterproof, has functioning heating and ventilation, will start on a cold morning without ceremony, and is narrower.
Defender advantages: more payload, better towing, a genuine parts and specialist ecosystem, more presence, and an ability to absorb modification that the Jimny cannot match.
The width point, again
On UK lanes the Jimny’s narrowness is a real, repeatable advantage. A Defender 90 is a wide vehicle by the standards of a Cornish hedged lane. Anyone who drives both regularly notices this within a week.
Cost of ownership
This is where they separate most sharply. A Jimny is a modern, simple, well-built car with modest running costs. A classic Defender is a maintenance relationship. Some owners enjoy that; others discover they did not sign up for it.
Which should you buy?
If you want something to use without thinking about it, buy the Jimny. If you want a project, a towing vehicle, or the specific thing that only a Defender is, buy the Defender — and budget for it properly.
We stock both, and we would rather point you at the right one than sell you whichever is nearest the door.
