4-seater Jimny explained: conversions, imports and what’s road legal
Four seats are the single most common requirement among Jimny buyers, and the single hardest thing to get. Here are the options and the trade-offs.
Why this is even a question
Between 2021 and its withdrawal, the only new Jimny available in the UK was the LCV: two seats, panelled rear sides, flat load bay. That was the price of the emissions classification that kept it on sale at all.
So anyone wanting four seats today is choosing between an older car, a conversion, or an import.
Option one: a pre-2020 UK car
For: factory four-seater, UK supplied, straightforward history and insurance.
Against: every one is now at least six years old, supply shrinks each year, and prices have not fallen the way used-car prices normally do.
Option two: a professional conversion
For: a much newer car — often delivery mileage — at less than the cost of a good pre-2020 example.
Against: quality varies enormously between converters, and a poor conversion is both unsafe and hard to resell.
A good conversion uses factory-specification seats and belts mounted to the original floor points. A bad one improvises. The difference is not always visible at a glance, which is why who did the work matters as much as how it looks.
Option three: the five-door Nomad
For: a factory four-seater with proper rear doors and a real boot. No conversion involved.
Against: the most expensive route, and supply depends on import availability.
Tell your insurer
This is the part people get wrong. If your car has been converted from a commercial vehicle to a four-seater, your insurer must know. Declared conversions are routinely accepted and priced normally. Undeclared ones give an insurer grounds to decline a claim — which is precisely when you would find out.
Ask the seller for a written specification of the conversion and keep it with the V5C.
